This Manufacturing plant employs over 600 people and have made it their priority to reduce their carbon footprint and provide 100% recycling facility for all employees on site.
All staff can recycle anything from glass, plastic, metal, batteries paper and cardboard. The most interesting initiative was that they decided to recycle their organic waste and produce vermi-cast on site at their plan, not something you would expect in an industrial environment, yet it has been extremely successful for over 3 years and contributes to beautiful sustainable gardens. 30L dustbins are placed in all the kitchens along with info-graphics detailing acceptable organic foods that can be placed into the worm-bins The dustbins are emptied into the worm farms as they reach full capacity. The bins are kept in an outdoor generator room with stable temperature and protection from the elements, they are airated regularly with a garden fork and rarely need watering. Following the rules on worm farming shows desired results and little effort! Harvested vermi-cast is applied to the Spek-boom tree project that surrounds the plant and is also used to feed the lawns, trees and shrubs. Goes to show that composting is not just for the back yard and should be considered in large organisations as well, especially as there is so much waste ending up in land fills that can and should be composted.

Oosterland Youth centre impemented this Tomato initiative to educate, secure income and provide quality food for their local community - inspirational entrepreneurs !We recently visited Oosterland Youth Center situated in Despatch, Eastern Cape South Africa, the initial feeling of going to a youth center would be quite overwhelming, I expected heart wrenching moments but seeing what these amazing people are doing to create a thriving environment left me inspired.
With finance being a struggle for all enterprises and individuals world wide it was refreshing to see dedicated people using different initiatives to ensure sustainability and provide a better future for the little ones in their care. What a great message to leave them with, we are responsible for our own success and we are able to provide for ourselves regardless of our circumstances. Oosterland's worm bins are underway and will be utilized to recycle all the organic waste materials available in abundance from their catering activities. The compost produced will be used in their gardens. If you would like to make a donation of any kind please feel free to contact Riaan at the Youth Center. I can guarantee that your donation will contribute to exceptional change and upliftment. [email protected] |
